Vera Cruz

Vera Cruz is a project that aims to explore the richness of Brazilian popular music over more than 150 years of history, showcasing how different styles and influences have shaped this unique musical heritage.
The performance presents a diverse repertoire spanning from the late 19th century to the present day, highlighting the fusion of European, African, and Indigenous elements that define Brazilian music. The project is not only a tribute, but also a reflection on the cultural ties between Brazil and Portugal, emphasizing that the Atlantic Ocean, rather than dividing, connects these two nations.
The musical journey begins with Lua Branca, by Chiquinha Gonzaga, one of the pioneers of Brazilian music, and continues with Odeon, by Ernesto Nazareth, one of the leading composers of Brazilian tango. The rhythmic richness of Tico-Tico no Fubá, by Zequinha de Abreu, brings the energy of choro, while bossa nova is present in the work of Tom Jobim. The performance also delves into the instrumental music of Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti, as well as the poetic and timeless songs of Chico BuarqueFrancis Hime and Edu Lobo.
The musical direction and arrangements are by pianist Eduardo Jordãoa deep connoisseur of the Brazilian repertoire, who created original versions for string quintet, piano, and percussion, highlighting the harmonic and rhythmic richness of these works.
The vocal performance is delivered by Luanda Cozetti, a singer known for her remarkable versatility and artistic sensitivity. In addition to giving voice to some of the selected songs, she also takes on the role of guide in this musical journey, providing context for the pieces and leading the audience through the stories behind the music.
The name “Vera Cruz” evokes both the history and cultural identity that connect Brazil and Portugal, representing a journey of exchange, influence, and encounter. This performance celebrates that shared heritage and the continuity of a vibrant and unforgettable musical legacy.
